We believe in a EUROPEAN SEARCH PERSPECTIVE.
Search engines face the challenge of prioritizing results. Our European search ranking algorithm will facilitate this process, enabling smaller search engines to offer diverse perspectives to their users. Additionally, they will have the flexibility to tailor their services to specific target audiences. This will also be an important resource for technology startups, especially in the field of AI, who not want to depend on their much larger competitors for data.
The EUSP Web Index and Ranking Algorithm can be syndicated by any search engine, delivering secure and sustainable data infrastructure.
The EUSP data can be used for development of European AI products, providing an independent and secure data basis for training purposes.
European Search Perspective is a Joint Venture of Europe‘s two leading search engines, Ecosia and Qwant
We are building a European web index, i.e. a comprehensive directory of websites and digital content. This index can be syndicated by search engines and serve as a key resource for the European data industry, e.g. providing a transparent and secure data pool for new AI technologies. In this way, we want to offer companies and citizens a new foundation that leads to more pluralism, security and souvereignty in the digital world.
A web index is a large database in which information about websites and their content is stored. The aim is to enable users to search and find content on the internet quickly and easily. Storing and updating an index of the entire internet is very expensive and complex. It requires constant updating by web crawlers that scour the internet for new websites and collect information about their content.
Today, Europe receives 99% of the answers to search queries from external infrastructures. We believe, however, that a higher level of digital sovereignty is essential for a functioning democracy and economy. With our new web index, we are creating a European perspective on politics, culture and values. This is a long overdue step towards more plurality in the digital world, which is also being called for by our society.
European Search Perspective is a joint venture of the biggest two European search engines Ecosia and Qwant.
Ecosia, based in Germany, operates a green search engine with over 20 million users. 100% of its profits are used for climate action, with the majority going into tree-planting projects around the world. This makes Ecosia the largest tree-planting movement in the world.
Qwant is based in France and affiliated to Europe's largest cloud provider OVH. It operates the biggest French search engine and is the preferred supplier to the French government due to its spike on data protection.
Yes, European Search Perspective is independent of any political party or institution. We believe that a plurality of suppliers is necessary for diversity and plurality of thought - across national, party political and organizational borders.
The joint venture is funded by the private companies Ecosia and Qwant.
We aim to deliver initial results in summer 2025. European Search Perspective will start as a partial web index in France and Germany.
We are convinced that more competition and diversity in the digital world will benefit all people, organizations and market participants.
We offer users an alternative web index that is hosted in Europe, prioritizes data protection, and enables freedom of choice.
We support digital sovereignty for the European economy and reduce its data dependence on a few foreign companies, especially when it comes to developing future technologies such as AI.
We create more competition for all market participants, which will lead to greater innovation.
